CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
Neutralization Activities and Exercises
===========================================
Part of America’s inactivity problems stem from the progress we have made in improving our way of life. Over the years we have become successful at growing and preserving food, developing modern means of transportation and eliminating much of the strenuous work from our jobs. These modern conveniences have made life easier for us and have resulted in a lifestyle that we are not willing to give up. It makes no difference how fat we become, how much of the population has diabetes, or how prevalent heart disease is — we will not give up our sedentary way of life easily. We will continue to overindulge in delicious meals, opulent desserts, and scrumptious treats.
===========================================
We have our favorite inactive or diet sabotaging activities: movies, television, Internet, social functions, restaurants, and we use much drive time to get to all of our mandatory functions. This is how our needs and wants create obstacles to our exercise activities.
===========================================
• We have to see the latest movie, and we have to get the popcorn-candy-soda combo, which saves us money.
• We have to watch our entire football game, basketball game, tennis match, golf game, or baseball game. We have to have sodas, chips, nuts, and dip while watching television (none of that diet stuff).
• We cannot go to a restaurant and just have the meal. We must have a couple of drinks. We have to have appetizers. We must have dessert (Chocolate to die for!).
• We must have the two-for-one special at fast food restaurants. We must have the super-sized soda. We have to have the super-sized fries. We have to have the super-sized apple pie. We must have the double cheeseburger (and we must have it our way).
• Where has all of the time gone? We still need to check our e-mail. Since we are on-line, we have to read the news. We have to read the financial report. We have to see what is playing at the movies. We have to see the movie trailers. We have to catch up on sports. (Hmmm! Something free? Let’s click here!)
===========================================
This is who we are and the things we do. How can we overcome this problem?
This leaves only one solution, and that is to find a way to neutralize the effects of our sedentary lifestyle without actually giving up the things we love to do. With all of the sports and movies to watch, with the need to eat three full-sized meals a day, and with the need to search the Internet, we simply do not have time to exercise. With so many demands, where do we find time for physical fitness? You can start exercising with all of the free time you get from going on the Skip A Day Diet.
