CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Large Group Workshop for Parents

===========================================

To conduct a large group workshop, ask members of the community to help out as facilitators and presenters. Use the following guidelines to build and arrange the workshop the way you want:  Choose the subjects that you want covered during the workshop and provide the facilitators and presenters with guidelines and instructions.  The presenters can do the research and put their own presentation together within the allowed time period.  Include teenagers as presenters when possible.

Presenters may be nutritionists, doctors, personal trainers, community leaders, fitness experts, concerned parents, or people who have lost weight.  Different presenters may cover different subjects.

Workshop #1, Topics for Discussion
===========================================
Narrator’s research guidelines:  Subject + Solutions
Ask narrators to discuss a particular problem and offer a solution that parents and children can use immediately.

Presenter:  Opening comments:

The diet of sedentary children is the same as that of sedentary adults. Adults, who adapt a sedentary lifestyle, generally do not teach their children to lead an active lifestyle.  The children are likely to follow in the parents’ footsteps.  It is easy for children to become accustomed to high calorie snacks containing high fat and sugar instead of fruit, sandwiches, or other healthy foods because snacks with fat and sugar taste much better.  When kids eat snacks between meals, they get all of the calories they need before dinner.  If they consume all of the calories they need in snacks, the calories in the healthy food they eat will be stored as fat.
===========================================
The best way to help children with weight problems is prevention and education.  Don’t let children have excessive amounts of junk food and sugar, and keep them involved in physical activities.  Make sure their fun activities are related to exercise rather than allowing them to sit in front of a television or computer.  Also, teach them about nutrition.
===========================================
Note: While writing this book, I noticed many proud parents giving their three- and four-year-old children ice cream cones so big the children could hardly hold them with their little hands.  I have noticed the same thing when parents give their children sodas and candy bars.  When I see things like this, I think, “If they only knew!”
